Visas
Working Holiday Visas
Working holiday visas must be applied for before turning 30 years of age and used to enter the UK within 6 months from the date of issue. Once anyone has been granted a working holiday visa, whether used to enter the UK or not, it is not possible to apply for another one. These visas are valid for 2 consecutive years (nothing can be carried over the 2 year period) and entitle the holder to work in the UK for 1 year of the 2 year period unless you have a skill required by the UK. Registered Nurses may apply for a Highly Skilled Migrant Visa – this is dependent on age, qualification, experience etc. and may only be used in temporary or casual positions (you cannot take a permanent position unless you are sponsored).
Spouse visas
Spouse visas are available to the spouses of people who hold British passports, ancestry visas or sponsored visas. These are available through the British Consulate at a cost. Please always refer to your nearest British Consulate for the latest rules and fees applicable as these change frequently. Spouses of nurses who gain work permits are also required to obtain ‘Entry Clearance Certificates’ in addition to the spouse visas and must enter the UK within 3 months of receipt of the ‘Entry Clearance Certificate’. We are unsure of the requirement for spouses of nurses who have UK or EU passports or ancestry visas so please check with the British Consulate.
Student Visas
If you wish to study in the UK and enrol in a course which renders you eligible to work on a student visa, you will require proof of your enrolment to register with an agency. As a student, you will be entitled to work 20 hours per week and full time during the term holidays while studying. You may require an ‘Entry Clearance Certificate’ in addition. Please check with the British Consulate.
